Winnipeg, Man. – APTN is excited to announce its fall 2020 schedule – a season filled with authentic new educational programming and the latest seasons of returning favourites. APTN is committed to revitalizing Indigenous languages and cultures while providing learning opportunities for viewers through television. Audiences can also expect new binge-worthy series to roll out throughout the season on the network’s growing Indigenous-focused streaming service, APTN lumi. 

“APTN’s upcoming fall schedule will feature a multitude of educational programming, with distinctly Indigenous perspectives,” said Danielle Audette, acting executive director of programming and scheduling at APTN. “We are excited to debut a variety of educational content that families can grow with.” 

The new season will roll out on APTN from September to the end of December and will include the following programs: 

Eager to learn more about First Peoples’ culinary traditions, chef Chuck Hughes visits Indigenous communities across Canada. Along the way, he discovers new hunting and cooking methods, cooks traditional recipes and becomes a privileged witness of these proud and nature-conscious Peoples.  

On Aug. 9, 2016, a young Cree man named Colten Boushie died from a gunshot to the back of his head after entering Gerald Stanley’s rural property with his friends. Sensitively directed by Tasha Hubbard, this documentary weaves a profound narrative encompassing the filmmaker’s own adoption, the stark history of colonialism on the Prairies and a vision of a future where Indigenous children can live safely on their homelands.
APTN Face to Face will present a special episode in October with writer-director-producer, Tasha Hubbard. 

This documentary series follows a talented trio who assist spirits and their loved ones find peace under the guidance of an Indigenous Elder. Opening the door to the spirit world can have unexpected results. That’s why the team of The Other Side approaches every investigation with respect. Intuitive Jeff Richards, researcher Erin Goodpipe and Spirit Guide Tom Charles know that they won’t escape unchanged – and neither will viewers. 

  • Nations at War – Season 2 (Premieres in Coast Salish Sept. 18, 2020; in English Sept. 19, 2020)

For eight centuries, Indigenous Peoples in Canada fought one another and waves of Europeans for land, resources, power, and survival. Hosted by David H. Lyle, this docuseries delves into the tumultuous history of what is now known as North America. From the Atlantic to the Pacific, the wars created by mass migration would transform North America into the continent we know today. 

  • Wentworth – Season 8 (Premieres Sept. 24, 2020)

Following the final heart-stopping ending to season 7, where a glimpse of “the freak” was dramatically revealed, season 8 of this explosive, multi-award-winning prison drama returns with 10 gripping new episodes.  

Wentworth’s popular main characters include three Indigenous lead actors. Rita Connors (Leah Purcell), Ruby Mitchell (Rarriwuy Hick) and Will Jackson (Robbie Magasiva). Wentworth continues to be a compelling character drama where Indigenous actors can reclaim their experiences on screen through self-representation.  

Indigenous-Language Original Programming:  

Follow Mi’kmaq medium Shawn Leonard as he travels from coast to coast using his psychic abilities to connect the living with the dead and bring hope, healing, and closure to Indigenous communities. 

Riverdale, Mystery Road, Petroglyphs to Pixels, a unique winter edition of APTN Indigenous Day Live and special programming in celebration of APTN National News 20th anniversary also join the lineup this fall. For the complete fall 2020 schedule, visit APTN’s website.
